Modern oceanography recognizes that estuaries and straits where salt and fresh water meet exhibit distinct physical properties. Haloclines and pycnoclines create temporary barriers that limit the mixing of water masses. The phenomenon is observable and measurable. The Qur'anic description of a barrier between two seas corresponds to what science has discovered about such boundaries. However, we must again apply the same investigative rigor. The scientific evidence for water boundaries does not automatically validate the Qur'an.
A skeptic might argue that the verse simply describes a common observation of fresh and salt water meeting. Yet the Arabic terms and the emphasis on a 'barrier' and a 'protected partition' go beyond a simple observation. The text asserts a specific physical reality. As with cosmic expansion, this is a testable claim. The fact that modern science confirms the existence of such boundaries adds to the cumulative evidence, but it is one piece among many.
We must also consider the historical context. In the 7th century, no one had the instruments or theoretical framework to describe the fine structure of water masses in estuaries. The Qur'an's wording reflects a precise observation that was not articulated in any other literary or scientific text of that period. Weighing Explanations: A Methodological Approach

One hypothesis is that the Qur'an's author possessed knowledge of the natural world that was unavailable to others at the time. Another is that these verses were interpreted later to conform with science. A third is that the similarities are coincidental, arising from general human observation. Each hypothesis must be tested against the evidence.
The careful reader will notice that the Qur'an's claims are specific. It does not say 'the heavens are wide' but 'We are the expander.' This specificity suggests more than a general observation. It points to a dynamic process. Similarly, the description of a barrier between seas is not merely a poetic observation; it is a precise physical description. These details strengthen the case for the Qur'an being more than human literature.

We do not have complete knowledge of 7th-century Arabic science. Yet these caveats do not weaken the specific claims we have examined. The evidence allows the reader to draw a conclusion, and the conclusion is that the Qur'an's descriptions are not in error.
Conclusion: The Evidence and the Open Question
